Overwhelmed by AI Choices? Here’s the Simple Filter I Use

There are countless AI tools out there today.

First, there are general-purpose AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini. Then, there are specialized tools: Perplexity and NotebookLM for deep research; Canva Magic Studio and Gemini Omni for image and video generation; and Cursor and GitHub Copilot for coding and development. The list goes on and on, growing longer by the day as new tools pop up.

Out of all of these, I have personally only tested a handful: Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and one or two others just to see what they could do.

So, how did I choose which one to stick with?

1. Match the Tool to What I Actually Need

Because my goal is simply to assist my trading—not to build a complex web platform from scratch—I decided early on that I didn't need the most expensive, cutting-edge flagship model right away. A capable, mid-tier model is more than enough to get the job done until my workflow becomes advanced enough to warrant an upgrade.

However, because I plan to automate workflows and connect applications directly on my PC, having a desktop application was a must-have requirement.

2. Narrowing Down the Choices

Once I set those two criteria—no need for overkill computing power, but a desktop app is essential—the pool narrowed down significantly. It came down to the three I was already familiar with: Claude, Copilot, and Gemini.

From there, I compared them based on two principles:

  • Value (Bang for the buck): What am I actually getting for the subscription price?

  • Convenience: Does it fit seamlessly into my daily routine without requiring me to change how I work?

3. Fitting into life's Ecosystem

Since I am already deep in the Google ecosystem, leaning into Google AI felt like the most practical move.

When using Gemini, Antigravity, and Omni, I quickly found myself hitting the limits on the free tiers. Upgrading to the Pro plan at SGD 28.90 per month did give me pause at first. It is a rather high asking price, especially when compared to everyday subscriptions like Netflix ($15.98), Spotify ($11.98), or my MyRepublic mobile plan ($8 for 300GB).

However, looking at the bundled package changed the equation. The plan comes packed with extras:

  • 5TB of Google One cloud storage

  • YouTube Premium Lite

  • Google Health Premium

  • A bundle of other Google services and higher AI rate limits

Because I already use an Android phone, Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Sheets on a daily basis, I could immediately make full use of the extra storage and higher limits. On top of that, Gemini’s flexibility—including access to models like Claude Sonnet and Opus within the selection—made it even more versatile.

In the end, going with the Google AI Pro subscription was the most natural and cost-effective choice for my setup.

Summary: Two main points when choosing the tool.

  1. Don’t pay for the most powerful model on Day 1: Start with what you need, save your money, and upgrade only when your workflow hits a ceiling.

  2. Prioritize convenience and ecosystem fit: The best tool is the one that integrates effortlessly into your existing apps and daily habits.
